New, XTERRA Short Track Relay Race for Amateurs

For the first-time ever, the exciting new XTERRA Short Track off-road triathlon racing format will be open to amateur athletes of all ages and skill levels in Trentino, Italy, on Sunday, September 24, 2023, the day after the XTERRA World Championship.

The exhibition relay race will welcome 50 four-person teams in any combination – all men, all women, mixed (two men, two women) or mixed with any gender combination.

“After every Short Track race we’ve ever produced, age group athletes will come up to me and say, ‘hey, I want to try that, make one for us,” said Nico Lebrun, XTERRA EMEA’s technical director. “So, this is for them, and we’re really excited to offer this fun format to everyone in the XTERRA family.”

Each racer will complete one lap of the high-adrenaline course that combines a 200-meter swim with an obstacle-strewn, 3km mountain bike, and a 1.2km trail run before handing off to their teammate.

For this inaugural age group focused event, registration is open to all who qualified for the XTERRA World Championship full-distance race, as well as a few XTERRA VIP teams.

The day will be filled with music, food, kids races, and fun for the whole family.

“This is really a community event, a day to soak up the sun with our local partners and our XTERRA friends and family from all over the world in a super relaxed environment,” said J-D Cousens, XTERRA VP of Operations and Global Marketing.

Registration for the event will open on September 5, 2023, once the participants list for XTERRA Worlds has been confirmed. It’ll be first come, first serve to the first 200 athletes who sign-up.  Racers will have the opportunity to hand-pick their team, or have XTERRA create a team for them with athletes from other countries.

“There is no pressure at all for athletes to have a team ready, in fact, we think it’ll be a lot more fun for athletes to join a team with racers they don’t know yet from three other countries and make some new friends,” said Cousens.

There are no big prizes or awards to the winners, as this event is just for fun, but XTERRA will keep time and recognize the top relay teams in each category, along with those who post the fastest swim, bike, and run times. The biggest prize, however, will go to the team that shows the most XTERRA spirit!

On a related note, the invite-only XTERRA Short Track elite race – which is part of the XTERRA World Cup – will be held on Thursday afternoon, September 21, and will be broadcast live online. Athletes coming to Trentino are encouraged to arrive on Thursday to take in the festivities and cheer on their favorite elites.
