Wilhelm Hirsch (DEU) and Dylan Magnien (FRA) complete the men’s podium, and Sara Svensk (SWE) and Henrike Güber (DEU) were 2nd and 3rd in the women’s professional race
The El Maresme region of Catalonia saw 3,000 athletes race in a special anniversary edition of the race
The town of Calella today hosted over 3,000 athletes for the 10th anniversary of the fan favourite IRONMAN® Calella-Barcelona triathlon. Jan Stratmann stormed to victory in the men’s field, finishing in a time of 7:28:25 in his second ever IRONMAN triathlon, and Catalonian athlete, Marta Sánchez took the tape in a time of 8:31:32, just two weeks after her 6th place finish at the Vinfast IRONMAN World Championship in Nice.
Sánchez led from the swim with a 4 minute advantage over the Dutch Sarissa de Vries, and maintained her lead on the bike, clocking the second fastest bike split of the day (04:32:55). On the run, Marta remained dominant as de Vries started to fade and a speedy Sara Svensk (SWE) started to hunt Sanchez down. Svensk succeeded in closing the gap between her and Sanchez, but the Spaniard was not going to let the Swede take away the potential of a home win, and she finished just over 4 minutes ahead. Germany’s Henrike Güber who was fifth off the bike, managed to run herself up to third to complete the podium and finish just over 13 minutes after Sánchez.
Sánchez, who is in her first season as a professional IRONMAN triathlete, said that “getting the victory at home is incredible’. In March she became the IRONMAN African Champion, which marked her maiden IRONMAN victory. She commented: “For this year I am more than satisfied, and I thank my team, all the sponsors who support me, all the people who are around me and in 2025 we will continue for more and better”.
Stratmann also proved competitive right from the start, as he came third out of the swim in the lead pack. On the bike, Stratmann clocked the fastest bike split of the day (3:59:06), as he entered transition in the lead with compatriot Wilhelm Hirsch and Great Britain’s Joshua Lewis hot on his wheels. On the run, Stratmann maintained his lead, forming a bigger gap between himself and Hirsch, finishing just over 90 seconds ahead of his rival. In the meantime, Frenchman Dylan Magnien was slowly picking off the field as he ran himself into third, and secured the fastest marathon of the day in a stunning 2:35:30.
Stratmann said: “It was a fantastic day in Calella, I had a good swim with a group of about eight athletes. After the transition from the bike I felt a bit tired, I knew it would be a tough marathon and it was all about getting into my rhythm, trying to find my own feeling, because the atmosphere was a bit humid. Wilhelm Hirsch was always twenty seconds behind me and I tried to keep pushing. I’m very happy with the victory”.
