KRAICHGAU, Germany / AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France (May 21, 2023) – Europe played host to three of the seven global IRONMAN® and IRONMAN® 70.3® Triathlon events this weekend, with today’s races featuring IRONMAN 70.3 Kraichgau powered by KraichgauEnergie taking place in Germany and IRONMAN 70.3 Aix-En-Provence taking place in France. A day which saw professionaltriathletes Rico Bogan (GER) and Laura Philipp (GER) claim victory in a time of 03:49:51 and 04:15:27 respectively at IRONMAN 70.3 Kraichgau powered by KraichgauEnergie, and Dylan Magnien (FRA) and Emma Pallant-Browne (GBR) claim victory in a time of 03:50:59 and 04:17:30 respectively at IRONMAN 70.3 Aix-En-Provence. Yesterday, Arthur Horseau (FRA) and Lydia Dant (GBR) took the win in Lanzarote.

IRONMAN 70.3 Kraichgau powered by KraichgauEnergie

The professional field featured defending champion, Laura Philipp (DEU), who kicked off her season being crowned 2023 IRONMAN African Champion. She came in full of confidence racing on home soil again after her memorable season last year which saw her produce an IRONMAN world best time of 8:18:20 in the 2022 IRONMAN European Championship in Hamburg, Germany. It was up to the likes of Lucy Charles-Barclay (GBR), Daniella Bleymehl (DEU), Ellie Salthouse (AUS), Svenja Thoes (DEU), Anne Reischmann (DEU), Heini Hartikainen (FIN), Laura Jansen (DEU), Els Visser (NLD) and Nikki Bartlett (GBR) to spoil Philipp’s run of form. However, Philipp continued her superb form by claiming yet another victory, finishing in a time of 04:15:27. A tightly contested podium finish with Charles-Barclay crossing the finish line in second place 43 seconds after, and Salthouse finishing 9 seconds after Charles-Barclay to claim the third podium spot.

In the professional men’s category, the pre-race talk was around two-time IRONMAN World Champion, Patrick Lange (GER). However, Rico Bogan (GER) had other plans, slipped under the radar, and surprised many by claiming victory on the day. He was not top of mind for many pre-event, with the hype around fellow Germans such as Maurice Clavel, Jonas Hoffman, Jan Stratmann, Marcel Bolbat and Christoph Mattner. A day that nearly saw a German podium clean sweep, with Bogan taking top honours in 03:49:51, Lange finishing in second, and Andrea Salvisberg (CHE) grabbing the last podium spot. Leaving Hoffman (GER) and Stratmann (GER), to finish fourth and fifth respectively.

In excitement, Bogan shared, “This is a big Win! It feels amazing. With a strong field featuring Patrick Lange and Andrea Salvisberg, it was so cool to come away with a win. Pre-race, I scouted out the course and I was like wow there really lots of hills. It is deceiving at first glance as it looks flat, but it just goes up and down (rolling hills), this suited me well as I am a good biker. I was able to bring it back home on a super awesome run course. The finish line atmosphere gave me goosebumps, that was awesome.”

Known as the land of 1,000 hills, IRONMAN 70.3 Kraichgau offered beautiful scenery and a challenging course. Athletes started the day with a 1.9km swim course that took place near the Hardtsee leisure center, followed by an undulating one-loop 90 km bike course, showing athletes why the region holds its namesake. After conquering the tough bike course, athletes completed a three-loop 21.1 km run course that was packed with spectators.

IRONMAN 70.3 Aix-En-Provence

A tightly contested race saw South African’s Bradley Weiss and Matt Trautman take on some of Europe’s best professional triathletes in Dylan Magnien (FRA), Bart Aernouts (BEL), Jack Hutchens (GBR) and Denis Chevrot (FRA) to name but a few men who took to the start line at this year’s IRONMAN 70.3 Aix-En-Provence. After a hard-fought battle, it was Dylan Magnien (FRA) who claimed victory in a time of 03:50:59. Bart Aernouts (BEL) just missed out, crossing the finish line 29 seconds after. The final podium spot was then tightly fought after by the South African pairing with Weiss getting one up on Trautman by finishing in third, with Trautman in fourth.

The professional women’s category saw Emma Pallant-Browne (GBR) edge Tamara Jewett (CAN) by 50 seconds to claim victory in an overall time of 04:17:30. Both women known for their extraordinary running prowess, this was a special race to witness with Jewett winning the run portion this time around, clocking in a run course time of 01:13:29. With Pallant-Browne clocking a run course time of 01:16:51. The last podium spot was picked up by Emilie Morier (FRA), finishing 8 minutes and 33 seconds behind the overall winner.

After crossing the finish line, Pallant-Browne shared, “I had a good swim; I was a bit cautious on the bike and had a solid run. It was great to come out here and compete against these super strong girls. It is actually my first IRONMAN 70.3 race of the season, the last one I did was over six months ago, so it’s been a while. Now I feel like my season has finally started and has kicked off in a good way.”

IRONMAN 70.3 Aix-En-Provence kicked off with a 1.9 km swim course at the Lake of Peyrolles, followed by a 90km bike course, which allowed athletes to experience the beautiful landscapes of Provence coupled with the technical and hilly roads of the Mountain Sainte-Victoire before heading back to Aix-en-Provence. The three-loop 21.1 km run course between the city centre and the natural Parc de la Torse concluded the day in front of hundreds of spectators at the fountain La Rotonde.

Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote

Yesterday’s Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote was one of the hot topics of the weekend with the pre-race start list featuring Sam Laidlow (FRA) who broke the bike course record last year at the IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and uber-biker, Cameron Wurf (AUS), who has previously held the bike record at the same course. However, it was Laidlow’s training partner and friend, Arthur Horseau (FRA), who took the spotlight and claimed victory on the day, with an impressive overall time of 08:22:25 at Club Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote. The women’s PRO spotlight was on Lydia Dant (GBR) who took the top podium spot again in Lanzarote, successfully defending her title in a time of 09:59:13.

The race kicked off with a 3.8 km swim which took place at Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen. Followed by a one-loop 180.2 km bike course known for its breathtaking views, picturesque villages and iconic places like La Geria / Mirador del Rio before finishing in Puerto del Carmen. To finish, athletes completed a three-loop 42.2 km run course along the Avenida de Las Playas.
